Dear MOTIVATION: My kids constantly complain about summer boredom. They refuse to participate in planned activities or go outside to play, preferring to stay on the couch or in their rooms playing video games all day. I want them to enjoy summer and make the most of this time off from school. How can I motivate my kids to put down the electronics and engage in fun, planned activities or free-willed outdoor play? I’m hoping for practical advice to kickstart their summer adventures! — MOM WITH BORED KIDS IN MARYLAND
Dear MOM WITH BORED KIDS: Your current challenge is a common summer challenge! Start by setting up a weekly or bi-weekly family activity schedule that combines fun with responsibilities, such as bike rides, picnics, amusement parks, local festivals, local kids’ play zones, and restaurants. Other options include making smoothies, enjoying water activities (such as a pool, water hose, sprinkler, or water balloons), or visiting local parks. Involve your kids by allowing them to vote on activities they’d like to participate in. Create a “boredom jar” filled with ideas for games and projects they can pick from when they’re feeling uninspired or “Bored.” Lastly, consider limiting screen time and encouraging friends over for shared playdates or sleepovers. With a little creativity, your kids will be off the couch, out of their bedrooms, out of the house, and into summer fun!
